Book Descriptions
for ¡Fiesta! by Duncan Tonatiuh
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
(Reviewed with !Felicidades! by Duncan Tonatiuh) Author-illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh’s stylized Mesoamerican artwork perfectly complements the topics of a pair of bilingual concept books. In !Felicidades!, each page is dedicated to a geometric shape, identified in English and Spanish. Each shape is also an object; for example, a square/cuadrado is a table/mesa. Collectively, the shapes play a role in the setting and entertainment for a child’s birthday party. In !Fiesta!, each page is dedicated to a color, identified in English and Spanish. Each color is also an object; for example, blue shawl/rebozo azul. Collectively, the colored objects play a role in the setting and entertainment for a street festival. An author’s note about the respective objects and celebrations completes each volume. The square design of these books enhances the geometric elements of the art.
