Book Description
for Time to Make Art by Jeff Mack
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
The question “When I make art, does it have to be perfect?” is the first of a series of child-centric queries about what art “has to” be and what it can be. The answers come from real artists, historical and contemporary, all of whom made or make art in different ways and with different materials. The encouraging tone and expansive view of art covers questions about materials, inspiration, mistakes, subject matter, and much more. The increasingly complex topics (“Can art ever be pretty and ugly at the same time?” “How about my computer? Can it make art?”) encourage a deep dive into the meaning and personal nature of artistic work and appreciation. Short bios of the artists referenced often include a personal and little-known fact about each (Piet Mondrian loved to dance the Charleston). With a format that lends itself to dipping in and out, and approachable illustrations that capture the style of each artist cited, young art enthusiasts are welcomed without judgment.
