Book Description
for Gnome and Rat by Lauren Stohler
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
The graphic novel for young readers scene is brighter and better with the introduction of a new odd couple—Gnome and Rat. Gnome (white), a quintessential garden gnome with a pointy red hat and long white beard, is full of enthusiasm, if a bit shortsighted. Rat, his roommate, is a spotted and sensible fellow (and decidedly cuter than his real-life counterpart). Five short chapters are peppered with silly dialog and woodland escapades. In one story, Gnome applies hair-growth shampoo with exponential results, causing him to be mistaken as a yeti. After he is rescued by Rat, they celebrate with lily-pad pizza, topped with mushrooms, sausage, and a pinch of cotton candy. Cute, comical illustrations by the author are sprinkled with elementary-age humor. (Ages 5-8)
