Book Descriptions
for Duck Goes Meow by Juliette Maciver and Carla Martell
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
“‘Mooo!’ says Cow. What joy abounds! Let’s all sing our animal sounds!’” The cow that opens this irresistible barnyard story with its friendly invitation gets an immediate response. There is Dog’s “Woof!” and Hen’s “Cluck!”; Horse’s “Neigh!” and Wren’s “Cheep!” There is Snake’s “Hiss!” and Boar’s “Oink!”; Yak’s “Grunt!” and Sheep’s “Baa!” But young Duck keeps responding with “Meow.” The animals gently encourage Duck to try again; Yak even offers a brief tutorial. Before Duck can explain why “I don’t say ‘Quack,’” a cat appears. “Mama!” cries Duck. And sure enough, when Mama cat invites her babies to snuggle, two kittens and Duck answer her call. A sense of whimsical exuberance is conveyed in the rhyming text and the visuals, which include tiny duck footprints that patter across the yellow endpapers (joined by kitten prints at volume’s end), bold colors, and expressive lines. This winsome picture book is sure to delight toddlers and preschoolers and invite their participation.
