for Beyond the Burrow by Jessica Meserve
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
Rabbit lives among other rabbits in a safe, cozy, rabbit-only environment, but pursuit of a carrot leads to an unwanted adventure that brings surprising revelations. “Falling is NOT a very rabbit thing to do. In fact, it’s something of a disaster.” But fall is exactly what Rabbit does while reaching for that sweet carrot. It sends her tumbling down a hole that lands her in a river, which leads her to an encounter with a not-rabbit (anteater), “giant and clawed and hairy, and most certainly scary.” Taking refuge in another hole, scared and hungry, Rabbit is given a gift by the not-rabbit. It isn’t a carrot. But it is “the most delicious thing she ever tasted.” Reconsidering her opinion of not-rabbits, Rabbit is now eager to learn more. What she discovers is a world full of many different not-rabbits, many opportunities for fun, and a great deal of kindness. Funny, sweet, but not too precious, this whimsical story features charming digital and mixed-media illustrations. (Ages 3-6)

From the Publisher
This adventurous picture book is just right for toddlers who may be reluctant to embrace new experiences.
Rabbit loves staying close to home where it is warm and safe and cozy. After all, the outside has things with feathers and scales and horns and hooves! It's certainly better—and safer—for a rabbit to stick to what she knows best: home sweet home.
But when rabbit spots a particularly juicy carrot just outside of her comfort zone, she tumbles into a whole new world she wasn't expecting!
Author-illustrator Jennifer Meserve has created a reassuring tale of exploration that will inspire boldness and curiosity. Paired with soft, colorful illustrations, this beautiful picture book also features a community of endearing animals and important social emotional learning themes of friendship, kindness, and bravery.
