Book Description
for Yoshi and the Ocean by Lindsay Moore
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
A spotlight on Yoshi, a rescued, rehabilitated, and released loggerhead sea turtle, illuminates the incredible journeys undertaken by all female loggerheads. Rescued by Japanese fishermen off the coast of South Africa, an injured Yoshi spends two decades healing and growing in an aquarium in Cape Town. When she grows restless, the scientists who care for her know that she is ready to journey home. They attach a tracking device to her shell and release her into the ocean, hoping for the best. Will she know how to find food? Will she become prey or get tangled in fishing nets? “Hello from Yoshi. I am here,” her tag seems to say each time she surfaces, sending hope and her location to the Cape Town aquarium. After a year, and 25,000 miles, Yoshi makes it “home” to the Australian beach where she was born and where she will lay eggs of her own. Extensive back matter includes an annotated map of Yoshi’s journey, diagrams of loggerhead anatomy and life cycle, and additional information about the ocean and ocean life. Shades of blue dominate the sweeping, sun-dappled underwater landscapes, allowing Yoshi and other ocean life to stand out. (Ages 5-8)
