Links between events in the present and related moments in the past, and how those memories connect across three generations in a white family, are examined with a patterned format and illustrations that visually indicate placement in time. As a girl picks blueberries, she sees her gramma watching from a kitchen window; her gramma is remembering being surprised by a rabbit in her mother’s garden when she was small. “Today, my mama is walking down the hill, coming to find me,” the girl continues. “And also …… she is remembering sorting blueberries in the breakfast nook of her mama’s kitchen. Her sister was making her giggle.” Brightly colored art in the present moments change to sepia tones with each page turn that transports the reader to the related memory in the past. The girl picking berries in the opening pages is an adult by the book’s end, remembering her time among her gramma’s blueberry bushes. This quiet examination of time and family love invites thinking about how memories exist within us, how they surface, and how they connect us to one another. (Ages 4-7)
