Book Description
for Have You Seen Gordon? by Adam Jay Epstein and Ruth Chan
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
“Animals hide and hop / and sniff and sneak / and peek and peep.” A simple text shows animals such as rabbits, foxes, and owls in the natural world, followed by a picture of young Indigenous children playing in four different seasons, accompanied by the text “We play too! kimêtawânaw mîna.” The text is primarily in English, with both English and Cree on the pages that show children. There is a list of the animal names in English and Cree at the end, including the Cree singular and plural forms of each animal name and a form that means “younger, smaller, cuter.” Flett’s extraordinary pastel and pencil illustrations use her signature muted palette, with realistic renderings of animals and children set against a creamy textured background that makes each picture pop. Sometimes quiet, often energetic, each double-page spread is a pleasure to look at. (Ages 2-4)
