Book Descriptions
for My Brother the Duck by Pat Zietlow Miller and Daniel Wiseman
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
Stella Wells is certain her new baby brother is a duck. After all, his name is Drake! And it doesn't help that he has a duck-bill pacifier and is wrapped in a ducky bright yellow blanket when he first comes home from the hospital. After developing a hypothesis based on these early observations, Stella tests it by doing what all good scientists do: She gathers additional facts (her brother quacks) and consults experts (her Latinx friend Carla, and her principal) to reach her final conclusion: Her brother is indeed a duck. An original and clever take on the new baby theme features a memorable older sister in a white family. Stella's chirpy commentary is well matched by the brightly colored cartoon illustrations that give just enough information for readers to draw their own conclusions about Drake in this entertaining outing from Wisconsin author Miller. (Ages 3-5)
