Still reeling from the shock of their mother's death, Hattie and her brother, Pheme, are left to live with their hard-hearted Aunt Tirzah while their father goes to seek his fortune in the gold mines. Hattie and her brother are miserable until they are befriended by a reclusive old woodsman, who helps them regain a sense of family.
