Book Descriptions
for Gooseberries to Oranges by Barbara Cohen
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
Eight-year-old Fanny reminisces about the journey from the town she loved in Eastern Europe to Ellis Island and finally to her reunion with her father in the United States. Fanny's best memory is of the day her new life felt like home, a day when she helped a garment worker and earned two nickels, one to save and one to spend on an orange. The muted colors of the illustrations help make this picture book with a somewhat extensive text suitable for reading aloud. (6-9 years)
