Book Descriptions
for The Great Snake by Sean Taylor and Fernando Vilela
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
From The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY)
Taylor describes rivers, forests, and villages as he travels along the Ama zon and shares tales of tricksters, myths, and magic he has read or heard from storytellers during his travels in Brazil. Diary entries serve as a frame story and add an element of adventure. Vilela’s woodcuts are bold and dramatic. The Great Snake also introduces readers to the importance of collecting traditional tales. Taylor links the preservation of stories with the need for sustainable development of the rain forests, if both are not going to vanish. Includes source notes on the stories, a glossary, and notes on the Amazon rain forest. 2009 USBBY Outstanding International Books List. ca
