A girl and her stepbrother must brave a perilous trip down the C&O Canal between Cumberland, Maryland, and Georgetown during the Civil War to deliver coal to support their family. Kate, whose father is dead and whose stepfather is fighting in the war, builds a new relationship with the stepbrother she once resented.
